Former football coach, player and current president of Youngstown State University Jim Tressel gave a great speech at the 13th Annual ACTION banquet on April 23 at the St. Michael Church Family Life Center in Youngstown. He addressed around 450 people who are currently members of the Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods to ask them to help improve the quality of life in the city. The three key points that he emphasized on for everyone to do were: to feel good about who you are connected with, reach your highest potential, and appreciate how things have changed for the better and always be a work in progress. Tressel finished up his talk by urging the audience to embrace the opportunity for everyone to do something together.
The former Ohio State coach was a quarterback for Balwin-Wallace from 1971-1974, and then continued on as a coach for a few colleges and the Indianapolis Colts until 2011. In 2014 he switched gears a bit and returned to Youngstown, where he once coached for 14 years, to be the president of the university. The Ohio native might have his football days behind him, but he is far from done influencing the academic world.
Tressel spoke at this year’s ACTION banquet, and the theme for the event was “Moving ACTION from Organization to Organism,” and that is precisely what the former coach underlined throughout his talk about focusing on the community of Youngstown.
