Justin Forsett is a Lakeland, Florida native who set many records while playing high school football in Arlington, Texas. In his final two seasons, Forsett had 63 touchdowns and nearly 5,000 rushing yards while leading Grace Preparatory Academy to two Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools division 4A state championships. As well as football, Forsett also learned to play the tenor saxophone and even a little piano while in high school. After being told by multiple college recruiters that he was too small, Forsett was one of the last signees of the University of California’s 2004 recruiting class. For his first three years playing for the Golden Bears, Forsett was mostly a second string player behind another NFL player Marshawn Lynch. During his senior season however, Forsett became the unquestioned starter and did not disappoint. For his senior season, Forsett ran for 1,546 yards and 15 touchdowns which ranked first and second respectively in the Pac-10. In the 2008 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks drafted Forsett in the seventh round. Forsett was waived by the Seahawks one week into the season even after having a rather productive preseason and then was picked up and released by the Indianapolis Colts in a span of two weeks. Although Forsett produced good results when he started he bounced around to multiple teams until 2014 when he signed with the Baltimore Ravens. After injuries and other issues with the running backs ahead of him on the depth chart, Forsett got his opportunity to start for the Ravens and played well enough to keep the starting job and secure a three year contract with the Ravens that offseason. For the 2014 season, Forsett amassed 1,266 rushing yards, eight touchdowns, and made the Pro-Bowl. Forsett says that his work in the shadows has what has gotten him to where he is today stating “I kept working, even in the shadows as nobody noticed, and when that time came I was able to maximize my opportunity and make the best of it.”
Justin Forsett made an appearance at the annual Hanover Rotary Club Sports Night. The event as always had many kids in attendance and gave them a chance to hear from someone who had been overlooked for much of his life for being smaller stature but when he was actually given the opportunity he was ready for it due to hard work and perseverance.
