Jay Barker AgentFormer NFL player and University of Alabama quarterback Jay Barker was the guest speaker at the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon on Friday, May 30. During his speech Barker spoke about his admiration and love for the city of Cullman and what it means to be a champion in the game of life.

“I would like to start by saying that the ultimate way to be a champion is through your personal relationship with Jesus Christ,” he said.

He went on to use an acronym for the word “champions” to help him explain how to be a champion in life.

“C is for commitment to excellence in everything you do,” he said. “H is for humility, which doesn’t mean just have a humble stature, but humbling yourself to serve others. A is for attitude. You may not be able to control your circumstances, but you can control your attitude. M stands for making adjustments. To be successful, you must learn to adapt. P is for preparations. You get what you work for. I is for integrity. O is for the opportunity to impact others. Look for this in everything you do. N stands for never give up, and S is for significance over success. What are you chasing? Contentment comes from significance, but if you seek success alone, you will be miserable.”

After his speech Barker met with fans, signed autographs, and posed for pictures.

While playing quarterback at the University of Alabama Barker led the Tide to a National Championship during the 1992 season. In 1995, he was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the NFL Draft and went on to play for both the Patriots and Panthers in addition to the Packers. In 1998 he made the move to the Canadian Football League and played for both the Toronto Argonauts and Birmingham Thunderbolts before deciding to leave football to pursue a career in sports broadcasting.

Barker currently serves as an analyst for ESPN Radio, and is also an on air personality for WJOX in Birmingham. He also co-owns the incredibly popular Rock the South music festival in Cullman. When he is not working he devotes his time to spending time with his wife, country music superstar Sara Evans, and their seven children.
