Roman Gabriel SpeakerNFL legend Roman Gabriel III was the first Asian-American starting quarterback, spending 16 seasons in the NFL before retiring in 1977. He was selected to the Pro Bowl four times and named Pro Bowl MVP in 1968.

Today, Gabriel is a motivational speaker. This week, he’s been speaking to middle schools in Rowan County and Kannapolis in Maryland about the success students can have in whatever they’re passionate about by staying on the right path and avoiding drugs and alcohol. The program is sponsored by the Rowan-Kannapolis ABC Board, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and the Salisbury Police Department.

Gabriel remarked, “You need to find what your passion in life is and focus on it,” adding, “that’s going to take hard work, because you are not entitled to anything.”

“In real life,” he said, “it takes more than just showing up to succeed – whether it’s winning an Olympic trophy or getting a job doing something you love. Working hard doesn’t guarantee anything, but if you don’t, it does guarantee you will fail.”

Teachers at the school have felt that Gabriel delivers a powerful message in a way that students can really connect to it.
