Mariano Rivera Speaking FeeMLB all-time saves leader Mariano Rivera continues to collect awards even in retirement. On November 4 Rivera was named the players choice American League Comeback Player of the Year by his peers five weeks after throwing the final pitch of his 19 year career at Yankee Stadium. Last season Rivera tore his ACL while shagging in the outfield during practice and never for a second believed that the injury would end his career. In 2013 he returned with legendary style, adding 44 more saves to his already record total and being named an All-Star in his last season.

“Without my peers, I wouldn’t be the same,” Rivera said on the MLB Network during the Players Choice Awards announcement show. “I definitely appreciate what they have done for me, choosing me and voting for me.” In addition to being named the comeback player of the year he was also named the Marvin Miller Man of the Year for his outstanding works off the field.

Rivera, 43, is one of two pitchers in MLB history to record at least one save in 18 consecutive seasons. He earned career save number 652 on September 18 in Toronto and his final appearance came on September 26 at Yankee Stadium. His last appearance was an emotional moment, as he broke into tears when longtime teammates Andy Petite and Derek Jeter were sent out by Joe Girardi to remove him from the game in the 9th inning.
