Mary Lou Retton SpeakerOlympic gold medal gymnast Mary Lou Retton spoke to the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce members on Monday, September 24, about how the importance of hard work and a positive attitude can make anything happen in athletics and in daily life.

Retton, now 44, was the first American woman ever to win Olympic gold in gymnastics in 1984. She told the crowd winning Olympic gold six weeks after knee surgery was “one of the most incredible moments of my life.”

The only woman to win three American Cups also noted, “Take that door of opportunity when you see it. You never know when you’ll be looking it in the face. But when you see it, don’t be afraid – you’ve got to seize it.”

Retton retired from competitive gymnastics in 1986, becoming a Motivational Speaker and Corporate Spokesperson. In addition, she travels the world to promote the benefits of proper nutrition and regular exercise. She serves as national chairperson and sits on the board of governors of the Children’s Miracle Network.
