The 2012 NBA Champions continue to make headlines as Lebron James dominates at the London Olympics as well as Head Coach Erik Spoelstra being named the keynote speaker at a Coaching Clinic. The Head Coach of 2012 NBA Champions Miami Heat took time out of his schedule to give a coaching clinic to a packed attendance at the Pasir Ris Sports & Recreation Centre. Those in attendance got to see exactly why Dwayne Wade, Lebron James and Chris Bosh wanted him to remain as head coach and lead them to their first title as a trio.
Erik Spoelstra is a perfect keynote speaker for a Coaching Clinic as he not only won the 2012 NBA Champion, but also has extensive experience on what it is to coach and even play the game of basketball. In fact, Erik went to the University of Portland and played for the basketball team where he was named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. Spoelstra was starting point guard for four years and averaged 9.2 points, 4.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game.
After graduation from college, Erik Spoelstra spent two years as a player/coach for a midlevel professional German team based in Westphalia. It was in this setting where Spoelstra got his first coaching job, as coach of the club’s local youth team. Shortly after Spoelstra joined the Heat staff as the team’s video coordinator after his father called Chris Wallace, then the director of player personnel for the Heat.
After two years, he was named assistant coach/video coordinator, then promoted to assistant coach/advance scout in 1999. He became the assistant coach/director of scouting in 2001. Of course as we all know today, shortly after their 2006 Finals win Spoelstra became the Miami Heat Head Coach. Talk about a journey that fans would love to hear first hand.
