Former NFL player Michael Sam was the keynote speaker for this year’s 2017 Louisiana Queer conference that happened on Saturday, March 25. The event was larger than last year, as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Giving Love, Acceptance, Safety and Support and Gamma Rho Lambda’s UL Lafayette chapter brought twice as many members this year in comparison to last year. At the conference, there will also be panels and group sessions that discuss a range of topics to raise awareness general awareness. Sam made sure to share his experiences with being the first gay football player to be drafted into the NFL after coming out, as well as the hardship and obstacles that he constantly faced. It was a very motivating personal story that the audience is likely to remember for years to come.
Sam grew up in Hitchcock, Texas and attended Hitchcock High School where he played both defensive and offensive positives on the football team. Even when he was an 8th grader, Sam participated with the squad as the waterboy. After he graduated from high school, he earned athletic scholarships to multiple universities but ended up choosing to go to the University of Missouri. The 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year was also the first openly gay player to ever get drafted to the NFL, which he got picked up for in the 2014 Draft during the 7th round by the St. Louis Rams. Eventually he was cut from the team when they made their final cuts to reduce the roster, but was added to the training roster for the Dallas Cowboys. However in May 2015, Sam was given a two year contract to play for the Montreal Alouettes where he still plays today.
Sam recently traveled to Louisiana to be the keynote speaker for this year’s 2017 Louisiana Queer Conference that happened at the end of this month. It was a memorable and motivating talk that hopefully gave many students some helpful insight.
