University of Michigan basketball coach John Beilein spoke at the U of M of Greater Flint’s Golf Outing and Sports Night at Atlas Valley Country Club in Grand Blanc on June 30, and he was one of the perfect people to attend to make this fundraiser even better than it was last year. The local coach is recognized just about everywhere in the state which made it a popular function to go to, and all of the proceeds from the benefit go towards scholarships and athletics in Flint and Ann Arbor. There was a dinner that kicked off the whole event that started at 6 p.m., and then Beilein got into his talk by providing updates on the basketball program. This was the 40th year for this fundraiser, and it was extremely successful thanks to the Big Ten Coach’s appearance.
The Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2014 got his start in basketball during his college years as a player at Wheeling College. He finished his bachelor’s degree at Niagara University in 1981, and for the six years prior and all during getting his education he began to coach at a local high school and community college. From 1982 to 2007 he coached for various institutions such as Le Moyne, Richmond, Nazareth, and West Virginia before landing the job with the Wolverines. An interesting fact about Beilein is that he has only ever had head coaching jobs, he has never once been an assistant coach.
Beilein spoke at this year’s 40th annual U of M of Greater Flint’s Golfing Outing and Sports Night to raise money for scholarships and athletics in the Flint and Ann Arbor area. He was very well received and the event was a huge success.
