Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio was the keynote speaker for the 6th annual Michigan State University Spartan Winter Tailgate that took place on Thursday, February 11th at the J.W. Marriott hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dantonio, along with MSU’s head coach George Perles, spoke with the local media before talking to the large audience full of Spartan alumni about the current football program as well as some anecdotes of their careers in the sports program. In addition to that, there were a number of other activities at the event that included a silent auction which benefited many MSU charities as well as non-profit programs in West Michigan. It was a great way to keep fans and locals engaged and excited about MSU football since the season has ended for the year, as well as pump everyone up for the Green-White Spring game coming up this April.
The Delta Charter Township, Michigan native lived in Texas and Ohio before finally ending up with his family in Michigan, and during his high school years discovered that he had a knack for playing football. Dantonio went on to attend college at the University of South Carolina where he earned three letters for playing as a defensive back on the football team before graduating with his bachelor’s degree in education. He went on to earn his master’s degree from Ohio University in 1980, which is also where he began his coaching career as an assistant coach for Ohio’s football program. Over the last 36 years of his career he has worked and coached for several different college teams including Purdue, Butler, Youngstown State, Kansas, Ohio State, Cincinnati, and now for Michigan State where he has been since 2007.
Dantonio recently spoke at this year’s 6th Annual Spartan Winter Tailgate that happened earlier this month, and it was a very interesting and profitable for the attendees and for the charities in the local Michigan area.
