Retired NBA star Peja Stojakovic and Minnesota Timberwolves star guard Ricky Rubio took a trip to Dubai this summer to help promote the sport of basketball to a children’s camp. The two of them found that all of the kids were very eager to spend time with them, and that the UAE is starting to develop a much higher interest in basketball overall. At the day camp, the two pros gave lots of advice, tips, and support to the youngsters who were more than ecstatic to meet with the big international names. Even though there isn’t much basketball played in the country these days, many of the participants were able to recognize the players and are better able to follow the NBA now thanks to developments made with technology and social media. The clinic occurred every Friday in August up until the 28th of the month.
Rubio is originally from Barcelona, Spain, but was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2009 NBA Draft as the 5th overall pick.. He made a name for himself while he played basketball in the Spanish league and is thought to be the best European point guard ever. He was a 2011 Spanish League champion, 2010 Euroleague champion, and a three-time FIBA Young Player of the Year between 2007-2009. Stojakovic is a Greek-Serbian national from Croatia and was drafted by the Sacramento Kings as the 14th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft but wasn’t signed officially until 1998. He spent 13 years playing in the NBA and is a two-time NBA 3-Point Shootout champion.
The two basketball stars made the time to travel to Dubai this summer to work with local kids and promote the game of basketball, and they successfully helped the kids improve their game while mentoring them on other aspects of it too.
