If you have seen the movie “Invincible” starring Mark Wahlberg, it may remind you a bit of what New York Jets wide receiver Wayne Chrebet went through to earn his keep in the NFL. Although he was not drafted by any team in the NFL, Chrebet eventually earned a walk-on opportunity with the New York Jets where he was 11th of 11 on the depth chart. Well since that day, he only became the Jets 2nd All time in receptions with 580 and 5th in yards from scrimmage with 7,365.
Wayne doesn’t do too many appearances, speaking engagements or autograph signings these days as he’s now a financial advisor with Morgan Stanley at their Red Bank, New Jersey office. However, he will be signing autographs for New York Jets fans at the SteinerSports store at the Roosevelt Field Mall on September 15th from 12:30pm-2pm.
A huge fan favorite in New York, Chrebet wore the New York Jet number 80 jersey for 11 straight seasons at the Meadowlands. During his career, he caught passes from 13 different players, played for several different head coaches, and worked for two different owners. Chrebet was formally honored by the Jets on “Wayne Chrebet Day” during halftime of the September 23rd, 2007 game against the Miami Dolphins.
Back in my high school football days, I wore #80 because of Wayne and even had his signed card in my locker for inspiration. Wayne was a one of the grittiest players the game has ever seen, taking massive hits and going over the middle to get that first down for his Jets-Jets-Jets!
