This upcoming June the Rady Jewish Community Centre will be holding the annual Rady JCC Sports Dinner at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The keynote speaker for the event is none other than NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino and event’s honoree is former Chicago Bear Israel Idonije who is a Manitoba native himself.
The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, Dan Marino, who was a great two sport athlete at his high school, Central Catholic High School, and was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 4th round of the 1979 MLB amateur draft. Marino elected to play college football instead however and attended the University of Pittsburgh which he played all four eligible seasons with the Panthers. Although Marino was selected first overall in the USFL by the Los Angeles Express, Marino decided to sign with the Miami Dolphins after being drafted with the 27th overall pick in the hall of fame laden 1983 NFL Draft. After being a backup for the first five games of his rookie year Marino took the starting job against the Buffalo Bills and never looked back including making the Pro-Bowl in his rookie season. The Dolphins’ second season with Marino at the helm was most likely his most successful season as a professional and as a team that included Marino records for most touchdown passes and passing yards and an NFL MVP award to go along with a trip to the Super Bowl. After many record breaking seasons with the Dolphins, Marino decided to hang the cleats up in 2000 despite numerous offers from other teams to come play for them due to many different reasons. Marino’s number was retired the same season and the team also erected a statue to celebrate the quarterback who led them to great success. In 2003, Marino was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and in 2005 the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well. Also after his playing career, Marino was a mainstay on The NFL Today for over 10 years, as an analyst, before leaving the show in 2013.
This upcoming June, Dan Marino will be giving the keynote address at the Rady Jewish Community Centre event Rady JCC Sports Dinner in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The 44th installment of the event will once again look to have a wonderful turnout and will honor, Manitoba native, Israel Idonije.
