Fred BiletnikoffNFL Hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff returned to his former high school, Tech Memorial which is now called Central Tech, and shared some words of wisdom on the game and the hard work it takes to be a successful athlete and person. “If you want to be an outstanding player, then you have to spend the time to be an outstanding player,” Biletnikoff said. “It’s that simple.”

The Tech alum played for the Oakland Raiders for 14 seasons as a wide receiver and is considered one of the best of all-time. His play on the field earned him a spot in the NFL and College Football Hall of Fame, further solidifying his words of encouragement to the players at Tech.

“He gives us a lot of inspiration for next year and it’s just really great to have someone so famous come here and talk to us,” said Dimitri Allison, a quarterback and junior at Tech.

After such a successful career in the NFL, Biletnikoff serves as a huge point of pride for the school and he hopes to continue to inspire students in the years to come. However, during his speech he did address some concerns that he had about concussions and the long-term mental health impacts of football. “It’s a shame the way things have gone. Later in life, you’re suffering for a lot of things that you did. And unfortunately it has been football,” he said.

In regards to the research that has linked playing football to increased instances of brain injury causing depression, dementia, and memory loss, Biletnikoff believes the football industry still needs to work on safety standards. “Well I think they’re improving, I don’t know if they’re adequate. I don’t think it’s ever going to be to the point where it’s really adequate or that you have it solved,” he said.

During his 14 year career he accumulated 8,974 receiving yards to go along with 76 Touchdowns on his way to four Pro Bowl selections and four All-AFL/AFC selections. During his career he helped lead the Raiders to two Super Bowl appearances and was named MVP of Super Bowl XI. In 2010 college football began giving out the Biletnikoff Award to the nation’s most outstanding college football receiver.
