Jerome Bettis KeynoteThis past month the Ford-Employees African Ancestry Network held the Heritage Awards where some of Detroit, Michigan’s greatest athletes were celebrated. The keynote speaker for the annual event was none other than Detroit native himself Jerome Bettis who played multiple seasons in the NFL and who joined the NFL Hall of Fame in 2015.

Jerome Bettis is a Detroit, Michigan native who did not start playing football until high school due mainly to his passion for bowling at a young age. After a very successful high school career at Mackenzie High School, where he was the top rated prospect in the state, Bettis went on to play college football at the University of Notre Dame. Over Bettis’ three year career at Notre Dame he finished with over 330 carries, 1900 yards, and 37 touchdowns. After forgoing his senior season with the Irish, Bettis was chosen 10th overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1993 NFL Draft. His rookie season with the Rams Bettis won rookie year and rushed for over 1000 yards which earned him first team all-pro despite only starting after the sixth game. After moving to St. Louis and a more pass oriented offense the Rams traded Bettis to the Pittsburgh Steelers where he would finish his career. For his first six seasons with the Steelers Bettis rushed for over 1000 yards and made four more Pro-Bowls. 2005 was a great year for Bettis even though he spent most of the season as a short yardage back mainly because of Super Bowl victory in his hometown and an ending of his career that showed the fifth most rushing yards in NFL history and over 90 touchdowns. After his playing career, Bettis became an NFL analyst for NBC and then was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.

This past month Jerome Bettis gave the keynote speech at the Ford-Employees African Ancestry Network Heritage Awards. The event had another great turnout as it does every year and featured some of the greatest athletes to ever come from Detroit.
