This past week the VIA All-Star Basketball Hall of Fame Banquet was held as part of the 41st annual VIA All-Star Basketball Classic held in Pennsylvania. VIA is an organization dedicated to providing support and services for children and adults with disabilities and had none other than “The Playmaker,” Michael Irvin, in attendance as a guest speaker. Irvin gave a passionate speech about competitive drive that resonated in a crowd of over 550 attendees.
Michael “Playmaker” Irvin is a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida who is one of 17 siblings and played his high school football at powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School and after college football at the University of Miami. While with the Hurricanes, Irvin set school marks for receiving yards, catches, and touchdowns and helped lead the Hurricanes to the 1987 National Championship victory against the Oklahoma Sooners. Irvin still makes multiple appearances a year to his alma mater and even gives tutorials to their receivers and mentors young Hurricane players off the field. After forgoing his senior season, Irvin declared for the NFL Draft and was selected with the 11th pick in 1988 installment of the draft by the Dallas Cowboys. In 1991 Irvin had his first all-pro season finishing first in receiving yards and also made his first of five consecutive pro-bowls while also helping the Cowboys reach their first playoff game in a few seasons. From 1991 to 1998, Irvin recorded 1,000 yard seasons in all but one of those years that included an impressive 10,000 yards and an amazing three Super Bowl titles in only eight seasons. During those Super Bowl years, Irvin showed why he was deserving of the mantra “The Playmaker” by making multiple clutch catches helping the Cowboys secure those victories. In 2007 Irvin was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in what was a tearful speech from Irvin and two years later joined the NFL Network as an analyst.
