In the early years of Alex Ovechkin’s career, far before he was the superstar he is today, a young man visited the Washington Capitals facility at the request of the teams owner Ted Leonsis. This young man, Louie, suffers from spinal bifida, and when he visited the team’s facility not only was he presented with a game used hockey stick, he and his family were also made Capitals fans for life.
Flash forward a few years. Louie is now 19, and he and his family are bigger Capitals fans than ever. Ovechkin is also a bigger star than ever, and Louie’s little sister Ann is no stranger to the Capitals captains ability on the ice. She is also no stranger to the fact that Ovechkin’s personality and kindness are just as amazing as his ability to score goals.
Recently, Louie made another trip to the Capitals facility, but this time his ten year old sister Ann was the featured guest. Ann, who has Down Syndrome, has always wanted to meet her favorite player, and Ovechkin went above and beyond to make sure she had an amazing day.
When Ann arrived at the facility, wearing her Alex Ovechkin jersey, he met her with a warm embrace and she hilariously compared the puck she was carrying to his hair, noting that the shade of grey he is currently sporting is not quite as black as it was when he came into the league. Clearly, their relationship was not going to come with any shyness on her part.
Throughout the day Ovechkin included her in all the team activities, sitting her on the bench during team warmups and giving her a tour of the team’s locker room, film room, stick room and facilities. As the walked around the facility Ann could hardly contain her excitement, but the best was yet to come.
While they were touring the locker room Ovechkin slipped away and reappeared with a special surprise. He was dressed in a suit, carrying roses and three tickets to the nights game.
“Hello,” he said. “Whats up? You want to come to the game?”
Obviously she accepted the invitation. Later that night she was treated to a VIP experience, and watched her favorite player score a gaol in the team’s 5-2 win from Section 115, known as the Ovi’s Crazy 8s section, or section devoted to those who specifically cheer for Ovechkin. After the win he met back up with Ann and her family for some sushi in the team owner’s lounge. It was the perfect day, for a very special fan, and for a very special family that will no doubt continue to be Capitals fans for life.
