Dana-VollmerOlympic gold medal swimmer Dana Vollmer spoke at Piedmont Avenue School about why changes are needed in the federal free meal programs. Vollmer spoke about the deficiency in the nation’s school meal program that leaves many low-income school children in higher-cost regions ineligible for federal nutrition programs.

Vollmer had to overcome a potentially serious heart condition as a child, a disorder of the heart’s electrical activity, which had her mother accompanying her to swim meets armed with a defibrillator in case she went into cardiac arrest.

Vollmer is now pursuing her career as a pro swimmer and continues to train in Berkeley, CA, and represents the American Heart Association as an ambassador. Recently she was honored at the Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards, for making a significant contribution in the fight against heart disease.
