Three-time gold medalist Dawn Staley recently reflected on how she became the first American basketball player to become the flag bearer in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The two-time WNBA All-Star said that she didn’t think her story compared at all to what other people were able to overcome, and was rather surprised to be chosen, but Staley grew up in a very rough Philadelphia neighborhood and bucked all odds to get where she is today.
She’s talked about how she was watching an NCAA basketball game on television as a child and told her sister that’s she wanted to do and was told she couldn’t. Those words motivated her to spend her time playing basketball instead of getting trouble on the streets.
Today, Staley is ranked as one of the WNBA’s top 15 players of all time, and since growing up in the projects, nothing has stopped her from success. She now focuses on coaching and on offering underprivileged kids their own chances at success. It’s not surprising to most of us that she would be given the privilege of being an Olympic flag bearer.
With such an inspiring story, Staley has the ability to deliver a powerful speech that can change lives both personally and professionally, whether it’s at a Motivational Workshop, Graduation Ceremony, any type of Corporate Event, or even featured as an instructor at a Coaching Clinic.
