Billy MillsOlympic gold medalist Billy Mills will be the keynote speaker at the Memorial Union Great Room as part of the North Dakota State University’s Native American Heritage Month festivities. Mills, who was raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota as a part of the Oglala Lakota, one of the sub tribes of the Lakota people, will be speaking about his Native American heritage and how it has influenced his life and his success. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Mills won the Gold Medal in the 10,000m race during the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo and is the only American to ever accomplish this feat. While competing in the 1964 Olympic Games Mills was a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. In 1976 he was inducted into the United States National Track and Field Hall of Fame, and was later inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1984. Currently Mills serve as the national spokesman for Running Strong for American Youth.
