Michael PhelpsLegendary Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps is set to begin the first step in his coming out of retirement tour. On April 24-26, Phelps, who announced that he was retiring from the sport after the 2012 London Olympic Games, will be competing in a meet in Mesa, Arizona.

His coach, Bob Bowman, said that he has entered three events, the 50 and 100 meter freestyles and the 100 meter butterfly. “I think he’s just going to test the waters a little bit and see how it goes,” said Bowman. “I wouldn’t say it’s a full-fledged comeback.”

Though he is far from being back in top form, he has been training since last fall to test the waters again and looks to be highly competitive at the event. Phelps turns 29 in June and is the winningest and most decorated athlete in Olympic history, having won 18 gold medals and 22 medals overall at the last three Summer Games. In 2008 he broke Mark Spitz’s record for gold medals captured in a single olympics by bringing home eight golds to the United States.
