clara hughes speakerCanadian Olympic summer and winter games medalist Clara Hughes will be speaking at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre in Chatham, Ontario on March 16, 2014. She will be passing through the area as a part of Clara’s Big Ride, a tour that will see her cycle 12,000 km over 110 days and make 95 community stops in an attempt to end the stigma around mental health.

Her Chatham visit is presented jointly by the Myles Neuts Make Children Better Now Association, along with the convention centre and Bell Canada Let’s Talk campaign. “Clara has been a wonderful spokesman for mental health,” said Mike Neuts, the father of Myles Neuts. “It’s very, very important. There shouldn’t be the sigma there’s been for years.”

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the event and a pasta dinner will be served at 6:15 with Hughes schooled to speak at 7:30 p.m. Neuts said more than 500 tickets had been sold for the event and that more are available. Tickets are $10 and proceeds go toward the Make Children Better Now Association.

Clara Hughes is one of very few athletes to have competed in both the summer and winter Olympic Games. A cycler and a speed skater, she has won multiple medals in both sports including two bronze in the Summer Olympics in 1996 and one gold, one silver and two bronze medals over the course of three Winter Olympics. For her contributions and accomplishments in advancing athletics in Canada she received a star on the Canadian Walk of Fame in the summer of 2010 and was induced into the Canada Sports Hall of Fame on November 15, 2010.
