David Wagner Speaking FeeParalympic gold medalist David Wagner will be returning to his alma mater and his hometown of Walla Walla to speak on November 19 for Walla Walla University’s Community Service, which is a weekly service put on by the university. The public is invited to the event, which will be held in the University Church at 11 a.m. During the service Wagner will speak about his life and overcoming a spinal cord injury to compete in and win gold medals in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Paralympic Games in tennis.

Wagner became a quadriplegic at age 21 when he suffered a spinal cord injury attempting to jump over a wave in Redondo Beach, California. He took a year off from college to recover and began playing table tennis at Walla Walla University as a part of his rehabilitation upon returning to school. Two years later he won the national championship in table tennis three years in a row from 1997 to 1999. In 1999 he attended a wheelchair tennis training camp set up by the top-ranked quadriplegic tennis player in the world. By 2002 he took over the title of being the top-ranked player in the world, and still maintains that title today.
