Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Johnston was the guest speaker for this year’s KidSport Nite of Champions event that took place on November 3 at the Hazelmere Golf Club in Surrey, Canada. The event will function as a fundraiser to benefit young players who cannot afford all the expenses to participate in organized sports, and last year’s gala was very successful as they raised more than $100,000. As a result, more than 1,000 players have been able to join sports leagues and have greatly appreciated all of the assistance that the fundraiser has provided for them. Johnston is going to draw in many extra faces this year, due to his popularity and influence in the world of hockey.
The Canadian born native attended Acadia University where he played hockey during his time there, and by the age of 23 he had risen up to be a coach of a team. When he got to the professional level he started out with six years as an assistant coach to the Vancouver Canucks, and eventually made his way to the NHL to coach the Los Angeles Kings. From there he went to Pittsburgh where he has been the head coach for the Penguins since 2014.
Johnston spoke at this year’s annual KidSports Nite of Champions in the city of Surrey and was able to help raise funds for youngsters who could not pay the fees on their own. It was a fun, inspiring, and motivating talk that all of the attendees will remember for years to come.
