Former University of Tennessee head football coach Phillip Fulmer will be the keynote speaker at the Tennessee Kidney Foundation Upper Cumberland Kidney Breakfast on May 14 in Cookeville. The event has the theme of “Family, Community, and Future,” and will be focusing on raising awareness of the risk of kidney disease that affect thousands of Americans each year. Fulmer was especially glad to be a part of this breakfast, because kidney disease runs in his family and he has a few relatives that suffer from different forms of it. Fulmer is expected to tell a couple stories about his former colleagues and teammates from his football career, and this will be sure to especially appeal to all of the sports fans in attendance.
Fulmer is not only a Tennessee native, but he also was a guard on the University of Tennessee football team in the late 1960’s through the early 1970’s. Once he was finished with his playing career, he immediately switched gears and became an assistant coach for 13 years before taking on the role as head coach in 1992. In 2008 he retired officially from his sports career to spend more time with his family and do quite a bit of motivational speaking. Fulmer made a comment that he has an overwhelming amount of opportunities to speak for various occasions, however it is hard to pick and choose the ones that he does.
He opted to speak for the upcoming Kidney Breakfast on May 14 because it is something that is near and dear to his heart, and is happy to help the Tennessee Kidney Foundation in any way he can. Not only does the former coach draw in people to the event to hear him speak, but he is also assisting the cause by making people aware of the diseases that could impact anyone at anytime.
