Jonny Gomes SpeakerBoston Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes has joined up with the Travis Roy Foundation to raise money to provide specialized wheelchairs for marathon racers. It all started when Gomes placed the World Series Championship trophy at the finish line of the Boston Marathon during the team’s victory parade on November 2, 2013. For Gomes, it marked the beginning of what he hopes will be a long-term commitment to wheelchair competitors in the Marathon.

“It was such a tragic day when it happened, the bombings, and you think about the people who were killed and injured,” said Gomes. “I was sitting on a plane brainstorming and wondering what I could do. I want to help people be able to race.”

in addition to contributing his own donation to the cause and encouraging Red Sox fans to donate as well, Gomes also convinced one of this endorsers, Phillips Norelco, to contribute $10,000 to the cause. The only catch was that Gomes had to use the Norelco shaver to trim off the legendary beard that was with him throughout the Red Sox playoff run. “I believe in what they’re doing and I jumped on board,” Gomes said. “if there are people who need help getting the equipment for the Marathon, we can do that. It’s a great cause.”

Gomes played in the Tampa Bay Rays organization for six years and also played for the Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals, and Oakland Athletics before landing a spot on the 2013 World Champion Boston Red Sox. During his 11 year career he has hit 149 home runs as a platoon outfielder and has always been known for his charity work in every city he has played in.
