50-year-old Roger Clemens said his main goal in his debut on Saturday with the Sugar Land Skeeters was to not embarrass himself or the club.

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner and 11-time all-star, had last pitched for the New York Yankees in 2007, but certainly had nothing to be ashamed about in his debut with the minor league team. In fact, he was rather impressive in his 3 1/3-inning stint.

Clemens gave up only one single, and no walks. He placed 24 of his 37 pitches for strikes with a top speed of 88 mph, and recorded two strikeouts. Following the game he stated clearly that he was not even thinking of a return to the major leagues, but that he would consider making another start for the Skeeters.

The two-time World Champion remarked, “We accomplished what we wanted to: I was able to get to the mound, get off the mound, and had some fun with it.”

Clemens deservedly received a standing ovation as he waved to the crowd and walked off the field. Whether or not this appearance was his last on the mound, there is no doubt that his presence will bring out the crowds and increase traffic for any event that he takes part in.
