Ron Darling Keynote SpeakerFormer New York Met and current SNY announcer Ron Darling was the guest speaker at the Danbury Westerners 19th annual Celebrity Breakfast held at the Amber Room Colonnade on Friday, June 7, 2013. Darling stood in front of a packed house at the Amber Room and spoke of humble beginnings.

“Thirty-four years ago, I stood where you stand,” Darling told the Westerners players, who are due to embark on the team’s 19th season in the New England Collegiate Baseball League this weekend. “I played in a summer baseball league, I was introduced to people I didn’t know, I was staying with a family that I didn’t know.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised in Millbury, Mass., Darling, 52, was a standout pitcher at Yale, the 11 innings of no-hit ball he tossed against St. John’s in the opening round of the 1981 NCAA tournament still considered one of the premier feats of collegiate pitching despite his losing the no-hitter and the game in the 12th inning. Darling made his major league debut in 1983 and went on to pitch 13 seasons, nine with the Mets, for whom he collected 99 of his 136 career victories. He averaged 14 wins per season from 1984-89, making the National League All-Star team in 1985 and helping the Mets beat the Red Sox in the fabled 1986 World Series.
