Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman will be adding another chapter to her illustrious professional basketball career by accepting an Assistant Coach position with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. Lieberman becomes the second women in NBA history to coach in the professional men’s ranks, joining Becky Hammon who was hired by the San Antonio Spurs as an Assistant Coach last year.
Lieberman, whose women’s professional basketball pedigree is the stuff of legend, will get her chance to share her winning ways and experience with the men. As a former number one draft pick, Olympic Medalist, and WNBA professional, Lieberman knows the X’s and O’s of the game better than any other and was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.
Her experience in basketball doesn’t just end on the court though. Lieberman also knows about the inner workings and management of a professional team from the front office as well. She was employed as the General Manager and Head Coach of the WNBA’s Detroit Shock in the late 90’s, running the team from the court and the front office for three seasons before turning her talents to the TV by becoming an analyst for ESPN. Never shying away from a challenge, Lieberman also is the oldest player to play a WNBA game, at age 50, when she played a game for the Shock, while assisting on two scores.
Nancy Lieberman will be an outstanding addition to the Sacramento Kings, who are in desperate need of leadership and experience coming into the 2015 – 16 NBA season. Her Hall of Fame pedigree both on the court and in the front office can only help the Sacramento Kings team who finished with a dismal 29 wins last season, not having made the playoffs since 2006.
