Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was the commencement speaker for this spring’s University of Wisconsin graduation ceremony that happened in Madison on May 14th. The Richmond, Virginia native spoke to the large audience about overcoming obstacles and preparing for the next phase of their lives as they leave their undergraduate work behind. Wilson talked about the hard work that he had to put into once he became a part of Seattle’s team, and what it took to stay motivated to bring them to two consecutive Super Bowls. It was without doubt a speech that the newest alumni of UW will never forget.
The 2014 Super Bowl Champion is one of the few athletes out there who has been drafted to play two different professional sports: baseball and football. Wilson played both sports during his college years and was drafted to the Colorado Rockies in 2010. However, in 2012 he informed them that he would be pursuing a career in professional football, and was drafted to the Seattle Seahawks shortly after that. Some people questioned Pete Carroll’s choice when he selected Wilson as a quarterback, but he has really stepped up to the game in the last couple of years and has become an icon for the team itself. He is also known for participating with many charities and doing lots of product endorsements, so it is needless to say that Wilson will only be getting more popular through time.
Wilson spoke at the University of Wisconsin’s graduation ceremony that happened on May 14th, and he was very well received by the members and audience of his former stomping ground. His speech was enlightening and motivating, and will be one that stays with the listeners for years to come.
