San Diego Chargers Pro-Bowl linebacker Dwight Freeney was in San Diego, California on Monday, October 6 to watch the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Denver Nuggets at the Valley View Casino Center with some very special guests.
Although the Chargers’ season is in full swing, Freeney took the time out of his busy NFL schedule to host 10 underserved students from the After-School All-Stars program at the game. As if watching their favorite NBA stars on the floor was not enough, after the game they got to meet their favorite player, Lakers’ legend Kobe Bryant. It was a night filled with high-throttle NBA action and special moments with two of their favorite pro athletes. Most importantly, it showed these 10 youngsters that they are valued and that they too can accomplish their dreams if they stay dedicated and work hard.
“I am so happy that I am in a position to be able to give back to my community,” said Freeney. “The opportunity for these children to see and meet one of the greatest basketball players of all time is something they will remember forever. We as professional athletes have to know that we are in a position to really make a difference in these children’s lives.”
Freeney was a staple on the Indianapolis Colts defense from 2002 to 2012, earning seven Pro-Bowl appearances and four All-Pro selections while also leading the Colts to a Super Bowl championship in 2007. During the 2013 off-season he signed a two-year deal with the Chargers and hopes to bring that same success to San Diego in the near future.
