Shaquille O'Neal Speaking FeeThe CES technology conference was held Jan. 5th through Jan. 8th in Las Vegas, Nevada and featured many of the newest technological advances in consumer electronics to date but it also had its fair share of high profile athletes make an appearance. Just some of the athletes to make an appearance were Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees, Shaquille O’Neal, former NBA player and current part owner of the Sacramento Kings, and Cal Ripken Jr., a former MLB player. One trend this year at the conference was the overlap of sports and technology. The CES conference was one of the hottest spots on the planet with countless other well known business people, athletes, and celebrities.

Cal Ripken Jr. was born in Maryland and grew up around baseball as he traveled with his father who was part of the Baltimore Orioles’ organization. After a great career at Aberdeen High School Ripken Jr. was selected in the second round of the MLB draft by the same Orioles his dad played for in 1981. During his 20 years with the Orioles Ripken Jr. played in 19 All Star games, won 2 Gold Gloves, a World Series, and played in, a still record, 2632 straight games which earned him the nickname “Iron Man.” After his playing career, Ripken Jr. was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame and had his number 8 retired by the Baltimore Orioles.

Shaquille O’Neal was born in Newark, New Jersey although he moved around quite a bit as a child before settling in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating high school in San Antonio, O’Neal went on to dominate college basketball at LSU. After a great career at LSU, O’Neal was the number one overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic. After winning rookie of the year and four years of Orlando O’Neal went on to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers where he won three championships and an NBA MVP award. After being traded to the Miami Heat in 2004 O’Neal would win another championship in 2006 before retiring in 2011 in which his final tally of statistics became overwhelming. O’Neal tallied 15 NBA All Star appearances, 8 first team all NBA selections, 4 championships, 3 final MVPs, and 1 League MVP. He will be up for the NBA Hall of Fame this year in what should be an easy selection.

The CES technology conference was a large gathering that had many around the planet looking to explore the newest tech fads and inventions. It was a great opportunity for athletes to come together to explore new technologies that will be implemented in the sports world.
