Six-time Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee was chosen to give the commencement speech at Ashford University’s fall graduation ceremony.
This is the first one scheduled outside of the Clinton campus in Iowa. Joyner-Kersee will speak to more than 1,200 students from across the U.S. and several foreign countries, along with more than 5,000 guests, who are expected to attend the Oct. 14 ceremony at the i wireless Center in Moline.
The athlete once named the “Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th Century” by Sports Illustrated, is a motivational speaker and philanthropist, creating the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation and serving as an advocate for children’s education, health issues, racial equality, social reform and women’s rights, according to a biography provided by Ashford.
Joyner-Kersee is said to be bringing her own perspectives and experiences to her keynote address.
