Stan Van Gundy and the Detroit Pistons are ramping up preparations for the 2014-15 season, but on Wednesday, October 8, Van Gundy and his team took the day off and headed to Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit, Michigan to relax and meet some of the fans that would be supporting them this season.
The goal of the trip was more than just to give the guys on the team a break though. It was also to connect with the fans and show them how much they appreciate their support. Throughout the day the Van Gundy and his players walked around and talked to fans, shook their hands, gave out hugs, signed autographs and posed for pictures. For many fans this would be the first time and maybe the only time they’d have a chance to meet some of their favorite players, which made it a particularly memorable experience for everyone.
Van Gundy began his coaching career at the collegiate level and slowly worked his way up the NBA coaching ladder. In 2003 he earned his first head coaching gig with the Miami Heat after serving as an assistant with the Heat for 8 seasons. In 2007 he took his coaching talents across town to the Orlando Magic and led the franchise to five consecutive playoff appearances, including a trip to the NBA Finals in 2009. After a taking a two year hiatus from coaching after the 2012 season he was hired as head coach and President of Basketball Operations by the Pistons in May 2014.
During Van Gundy’s eight years as a NBA head coach he has led his teams to seven playoff appearances and hopes to continue his streak of postseason success this season in Detroit. The Pistons are certainly happy to have them as a part of their organization going forward.
