Peyton Manning KeynoteDenver Broncos star quarterback Peyton Manning was the keynote speaker at The John Lynch Foundation’s 16th Annual Salute the Stars award luncheon at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Friday, May 2. Presented by the Riemann Foundation and Four Point Energy, the luncheon is held each year to honor the Denver area’s brightest young student-athletes who excel in academics, athletics and community involvement.

“Peyton’s a very busy man and he does a lot of these, but when I called he said, ‘Absolutely. I’ve got great belief in what you’re doing. I’ll be there.’ He has been, and I really appreciate that,” said John Lynch, who played safety for the Broncos from 2004 to 2007. “I’m excited. And in Peyton Manning fashion, I’ve brought my pen and paper, my notepad, and I’m going to be taking notes.”

When Peyton took the stage it is likely that many had a pen and paper ready to take notes, and considering the valuable advice he gave the crowd, it would have been smart to.

“The reality is that being a scholastic or a collegiate student-athlete has a lot more to do with learning that it does with winning,” said Manning during his speech. “Student-athletes learn more than most people bout the blessings and lading pleasure of camaraderie and shared sacrifice, collective responsibility and commitment to excellence, time management and life management. In some ways, it wouldn’t been a lot easier to have been just a football player or baseball player or swimmer without being a student, and the opposite holds true as well. It would be much easier to be just a student and save the other sports for some other day and time. But it wouldn’t have been as joyous or rich or quite candidly as humbling to have been one without the other.”

A living legend in the sport of football, Manning is fresh off winning his NFL record fifth MVP award to go along with 13 Pro-Bowl selections, 7 First-Team All-Pro selections, three AFC Championship rings and one Super Bowl ring. Already a member of the NFL 2000’s All-Decade team, everything Manning does form here on out only adds to a resume that will no doubt land him in the Professional Football Hall of Fame on his first ballot.
