Earlier this month Truman State University held their Holman Family Distinguished Speaker Series and featured none other than six time Olympic champion Jackie Joyner Kersee. Kersee spoke about many things that lead to her success such as her hard working attitude that helped her overcome challenges and turn them into triumphs.
The East St. Louis, Illinois native, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, qualified for the Olympic trials as a high schooler finishing eighth 1980 behind another high schooler. Kersee attended the University of California at Los Angeles or UCLA and starred in both track and field as well as basketball. Kersee scored over 1,100 points in her four seasons with the Bruins and while at UCLA in 1984 she won a silver medal in the Heptathlon at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Four years later Kersee starred on the track field for the United States taking home two gold medals in Seoul in both the heptathlon and long jump. Another four years and another gold medal took place for Kersee in the 1992 Barcelona games where she won the heptathlon once again. In 1996, Kersee enjoyed a short career in the American Basketball League by playing for the Richmond Rage and retired shortly thereafter. Kersee was voted by Sports Illustrated as the greatest female athlete of the 20th century and still today holds multiple records in the heptathlon and long jump. Along with her athletic success Kersee has also aided in founding two foundations, the Jackie Joyner Kersee Foundation and Athletes for Hope.
Earlier this month American track star Jackie Joyner-Kersee appeared at Truman State to give a guest speech. Kersee focused on triumphs over challenges and how hard work helped her accomplish those triumphs. The event had an amazing showing of attendees and gave the attendees the chance to hear from if the not the most, one of the most successful athletes ever.
