Louis Zamperini SpeakerWorld War II veteran and former Olympic track and field athlete who competed in the Berlin Olympics, Louis Zamperini is coming to Western Michigan University on October 23.

Zamperini will speak about the incredible events that took place in his life on Tuesday in the Ballroom of the Bernhard Center at 6 p.m.

In addition to running in the Berlin Olympics, he was in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II and survived for over a month on a life raft after his plane crashed in the Pacific Ocean, only to become a prisoner of war after being captured by Japanese soldiers. After the war, he returned to Japan as a missionary, even preaching forgiveness to some of the same Japanese soldiers that mistreated him while he was a prisoner of war.

Zamperini is the main character of the book, “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption,” a #1 New York Times best seller written by Laura Hillenbrand. Hearing this amazing 95-year-old tell his story is an opportunity that should not be missed.
