Tamika Catchings Keynote SpeakerWNBA star Tamika Catchings was the keynote speaker for the WIN for KC Luncheon held on Friday, January 31 in Kansas City. During her speech Catchings spoke about overcoming being born with a hearing impediment that affected her speech and required her to wear clunky hearing aides by excelling in sports. “It was my passion for sports that grew my self confidence,” she said.

The event, held to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, recognized local girls and women for their community contributions and achievements in sports. After her speech Catchings met with young players in attendance, took photos and signed autographs.

The Indiana Fever’s “do everything” forward first came to Kansas City in 1998 as a member of the 1997-98 Tennessee Lady Volunteers National Championship team. In 2001 the Indiana Fever drafted her #3 overall in the WNBA Draft and just one season later she was named the leagues Rookie of the Year. During her time with the Fever she has earned 7 All-Star selections and has been named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year five times. Perhaps her greatest accomplishment of all though has come in her international play, helping the US National Team to three Gold Medals in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympic Games.
