Wally Backman SpeakerWorld Series Champion Wally Backman was the keynote speaker at the seventh annual Hot Stove and Hall of Fame Dinner at St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam. The event, which honors individuals being induced into one of two Hall of Fame wings: the Amsterdam Baseball Hall of Fame or the Mohawks Baseball Hall of Fame, was held on February 1, 2014.

During the event Backman mingled with attendees and signed autographs prior to the induction ceremony. During his speech he spoke about his career with the New York Mets, including being a part of the 1986 World Series Championship team that won 108 games. As the Mets second baseman that season set the stage for their explosive offense by hitting .320 and scoring 67 runs to go along with 13 stolen bases. A career .275 hitter over the course of 14 major league seasons, Backman currently serves as the manager for the triple-A affiliate of the Mets, the Las Vegas 51’s.
