New York Yankees pitcher Brandon McCarthy recently became the first active Major League Baseball player to join Athlete Ally’s group of 101 athletes as an “ally” to support LGBT athletes. On Thursday, October 2 he performed his first action as an ally at the 2014 Athlete Ally Action Awards, awarding Hall of Famer Yogi Berra with one of the first Athlete Ally Action Awards.
Athlete Ally’s inaugural fundraising dinner was held at Cafe Rouge near Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. During the event Athlete Ally, the nation’s largest non-profit organization in LGBT sports, raised $200,000 for their initiative to eliminate homophobia and transphobia in athletic communities through educational programs of inclusion, respect and allyship.
Though McCarthy is the first active big leaguer to join the Athlete Ally team, Major League Baseball has already shown their support for the organization, receiving recognition from MLB executive vice president of baseball operations, Joe Torre. McCarthy’s role with Athlete Ally will be to not only help out any gay Major Leagues who might wish to come out, but also lead by example and speak out against discordant tones when it comes to homophobia and transphobia in the league.
