Alan McLaren was signed for Hearts by Alec MacDonald and Sandy Jardine in April 1987 from Calvary Park Boys Club. McLaren made his debut for Hearts in a testimonial match against Falkirk at the age of 17 in April 1988. He established himself as a first team regular in the 1989/90 season. current Scotland boss Craig Levein at the heart of the Jam Tarts defence. He forced his way into the Scottish International set up during a tour to the USA and Canada in May 1992. In
November of 1992 having made just 3 appearances for Scotland he was in the Scottish side that lined up for a World Cup Qualifier against Italy at Ibrox. Mclaren’s task was to mark the Italian legend Roberto Baggio a task which he mastered with the Italian scarcely getting a kick in the 0-0 draw.

With Richard Gough nearing the end of his career Walter Smith was on the look out for a successor to Gough and a future captain as well. It was McLaren who he identified as being the man who could fill that role and in 1994 he brought Alan to Ibrox for around 1 million plus David McPherson returning to Hearts for the second time as part of the deal.
McLaren could not have wished for a better start slotting into the centre of defence in a Laudrup inspired 3-1 league defeat of Celtic at Hampden. In his first two season McLaren was almost an ever present in the side. Injury though started to affect him in his third season and problems with his knee prevented him from playing unless he was taking pain killing injections. McLaren however was to finish the season on the greatest of high’s. With Richard Gough out of the team it would be McLaren who would lead out and captain Rangers at Tannadice on the night that 9 In A Row was to be clinched.
That night sadly was to be the last competitive appearance for Alan McLaren despite one last trip to a specialist in Germany to try out a new treatment method the diagnosis was not good and at only 28 Alan was told that his playing days were over. Like Ian Durrant before him a player that Walter Smith had identified as the future of his new Rangers was to be prevented from fulfilling his true potential at Ibrox.
McLaren was to turn out in two friendly matches for Rangers after that one indeed his own Testimonial at Ibrox. Alan still works behind the scenes at Ibrox today carrying out a role in matchday hospitality.
