Before becoming one half of one of the most famous fashion design teams in the world Domenico Dolce was just a regular little kid growing up in Polizzi Generosa near Palermo Sicily where he was born on September 13, 1958. Domenico was born into the fashion world to a degree insofar as his family owned a clothing factory. While the clothing they produced was more or the less the everyday wear worn by the general public than the glam and glitz designs that D&G (Dolce & Gabbana) is known for today, the training and exposure was invaluable.

Domenico moved on to Sicily where he formally studied fashion and design with the full blessing of his family. While initially it was thought he would return with these talents to help the family business prosper, he instead had grander dreams than designing practical, durable everyday clothes. Around about the time he graduated he met Stefano Gabbana, another devotee to fashion with similar dreams. Although Stefano had no formal training in clothing design he had a great vision for what was and was viable and a formal education in graphic design. He, like Domenico, was also gay. It didn't take long for the partnership to grow both professionally and personally.

For the next six years Domenicoo continued honing his skills primarily doing freelance work to support his experimentation with the designs he and Stefano had been working on. Like many of the great Italian fashion designers before him, Stefano realized the real money was in designing clothes for women. While men enjoyed being fashionable, for women it is often a must, and finding the perfect line to appeal to them would be the quickest most sure way to advance out of the world of freelancing and into his own business.

By 1986 he and Stefano were well into a committed relationship and preparing for the launch of their first women's collection. It turned out to be an instant success and global sensation. It was so huge in fact that they took over the design of the Complice line which had once been under the hand of Versace. Domenico saw that the duo could professionally spread far beyond creating designs under someone else's label and pushed for the opening of their own boutiques, the first of which opened in Japan in 1989.

Within a year Domenico was sold on the idea they were ready to launch their first men's line of clothing. Encouraged by the success of the Japanese and following Milan boutique, Stefano felt it was time to expand. The men's line did very well, but was not nearly as huge as their women's line had been. Still, it was enough to propel them into every corner of the globe making each seasons line one of the most anticipated. Their designs began adorning the biggest celebrities in the world, and their trademark D&G line of accessories are among some of the best selling in the world each year.

Personally Domenico split with Stefano in in 2005 briefly, and then again in 2008 ending their partnership of nearly 28 years. They still work together professionally and remain very close friends, however that chapter seems to be closed at least for now. While the have maintained as much privacy around the reason for the split as possible the press still speculates in regards to it regularly. Domenico is still very active in AIDS education/Awareness and fund raising initiatives as he has been since the late 1980's. He has stated he has no plans for retirement or to work professionally with anyone but Stefano. So far as his personal relationships after Stefano he has been very tight lipped and it is believed he is still single.
