Caron Butler Biography
Caron Butler was born March 13, 1980 and is a basketball player,currently playing at small forward for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks.
He was a lottery pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, selected with the 10th overallpick by the Miami Heat. He is remembered for his comments on draft day afternine teams passed over him, saying that he was going to make them pay for therest of his career. In his first season with the Heat, he averaged 15 pointsand 5 rebounds. During his second season his stats fell slightly to 9 points and4 rebounds, with an injury-hampered effort all season. He played in only 68games in his second year. In 2004 Miami nearly scored a huge upset, pushing thefavored Indiana Pacers to six games before falling in the conferencesemifinals. At the end of the season, he was traded along with Lamar Odom andBrian Grant to the Lakers in exchange for Shaquille O'Neal.
Caron Butler was traded along with Chucky Atkins to theWashington Wizards in exchange for Kwame Brown and Laron Profit. Then beforethe 2005-06 season opener, he inked a 5-year, $46 million dollar deal with theteam. He has 2 years and $20,342,930 left on his deal. He became part ofWashington's new "Big 3", previously made up of Gilbert Arenas,Antawn Jamison and Larry Hughes (now with the New York Knicks) whom Butlerreplaced in the 2005-06 season. Butler was nicknamed "Tough Juice" bycoach Eddie Jordan for his aggressive and passionate play, epitomized byButler's 20 rebounds in Game 6 of the Cavaliers series.
Butler is known offensively for his face up line drivejumper, as well as his athleticism and ability to finish around the rim.
On January 17, 2007, Butler converted his first game-winningbasket, a dunk following a pass from DeShawn Stevenson with 2.2 secondsremaining against the Knicks to give the Wizards a 99-98 win. Butler was namedEastern Conference Player of the Week for January 15-21, 2007.
Butler enjoyed his best season as a professional in 2007,with career-high averages of 19.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.7 assists pergame.
Caron Butler was named as a reserve to the 2007 NBA EasternConference All-Star team, his first appearance.
He broke his hand late in the 2006-07 season attempting toblock a shot and was forced to sit out during the playoffs along with theinjured Gilbert Arenas and watch as the Wizards were swept in the opening roundby Cleveland.
On February 13, 2008, Butler, who was out with a left hipflexor strain, and later diagnosed as a small labral tear of the left hipjoint, was selected as a reserve for the East in the 2008 NBA All-Star Game inNew Orleans, Louisiana, but was forced to sit out. He was replaced byCommissioner David Stern with Celtics guard Ray Allen.
Due to the injury, Butler missed 20 of the Wizards' last 35games in the 2008 season. He returned to the lineup on March 13 (his 28thbirthday), when the Wizards hosted the Cleveland Cavaliers. He registered 19points (8-for-18 field goals) five rebounds in 41 minutes played in theWizards' 101-99 win over the Cavs.
