Magnus Samuelsson Biography

Magnus Samuelsson (born on December 21, 1969), is a Swedish strongman and winner of the 1998 World's Strongest Man contest in Morocco.

Strongman career

Magnus has achieved a podium place in WSM on 5 separate occasions. Magnus holds the record for reaching the World's Strongest Man finals 10 times, a feat which he achieved over a 13 year span from 1995-2007. He was the first man to ever win the Strongman Super Series overall title in 2001. He is also one of only 5 men in the world to have successfully closed the No. 4 Captains of Crush hand-gripper under official conditions. Magnus has achieved a podium finish in 31 total contests, making him one of the most successful strongman competitors of all time.

Magnus' brother, Torbjorn Samuelsson also competes in strongman, winning Sweden's Strongest Man 2 times and competing at the World's Strongest Man contest from 2000-2002.

During the heats for the 1995 World's Strongest Man contest, Magnus broke the arm of Nathan Jones. In his "World's Strongest Arms" DVD Magnus explains the fundamentals of arm-wrestling. Magnus never intended for Jones to become injured, but Jones was using the novice technique of side twisting. Overall body strength cannot be used in such a position, it is a very dangerous movement frequently resulting in a broken humerus bone.

Magnus is supported at every competition by his wife Kristin, a former two-time winner of Sweden's strongest woman.

Magnus returned to World's Strongest Man in the 2006, but failed to make it out of the qualifying rounds due to a back injury. In 2007 Magnus was able to qualify for the finals, and finished in 5th place.

Retirement/other interests

At the 2008 World's Strongest Man contest after failing to make the finals, he announced his retirement from competition after 14 years competing in the sport. "You should never say 'never,'" Magnus Samuelsson said, commenting on his announced retirement from the World's Strongest Man contest.

Magnus was a European Armwrestling champion prior to his strongman career.

Magnus was the winner of Swedish version of the television series Dancing with the Stars in 2009, beating Laila Bagge in the final.

Magnus is a full time farmer, along with his brother Torbjorn Samuelsson.

Samuelsson is also an automobile racing enthusiast, and in 2010 he competed on the Swedish round of the World Rally Championship, Rally Sweden, finishing in 35th position out of 55.

On his official website Magnus states, "My ambition was to see how strong I could get, and I am totally clean, which proves that success is possible without drugs."
