Ron English Speaker Profile

Ron English was born May 21, 1968 in Pomona, California and is the head coach of the Eastern Michigan Eagles football team, replacing Jeff Genyk.

He coached the defensive secondary at Michigan from 2003 through 2005; in February 2006, he accepted a position on the coaching staff of the National Football League's Chicago Bears. However, Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr persuaded English to stay at Michigan as the defensive coordinator after Jim Herrmann, the Wolverines' defensive coordinator from 1997 to 2005, accepted a coaching position with the NFL's New York Jets. In the 2006 season, English coached only safeties, rather than the entire defensive secondary, to allow him to concentrate more fully on his responsibilities as defensive coordinator. English showed great success against most run-heavy teams in the Big Ten, posting the best run defense in the nation.

English, along with all the assistant coaches at the University of Michigan, was fired on December 20, 2007 by incoming head coach Rich Rodriguez. English interviewed for the head coaching vacancies at the University of Arkansas and the University of Michigan before accepting defensive coordinator duties for Steve Kragthorpe at the University of Louisville.

English is now the head coach at Eastern Michigan; he is one of six African American head coaches in major college football, the others being Buffalo's Turner Gill, Miami's Randy Shannon, Houston's Kevin Sumlin New Mexico's Mike Locksley, and Miami of Ohio's Mike Haywood.
