The Air Force Falcons are a college football team from the U.S. Air Force Academy located just outside Colorado Springs, Colorado. Headed by Coach Troy Calhoun, the team has been in existence since 1955 and competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA Division I and the Mountain West Conference.
The Falcons are known as having one of the best rushing teams in the nation and have ranked among the nation’s top ten in rushing 19 times in 21 years. The team was at their peak in 1985, headed by Coach Fisher DeBerry, and came within one win of playing for the national championship. Recording ten consecutive wins, they climbed to number two in the nation’s polls but ultimately lost to BYU by seven points in the penultimate game of the season. One of the Falcon’s players that year included defensive lineman Chad Hennings who went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys. Ted Sundquist was the team’s captain in 1983, and went on to spend 16 years in the NFL working for the Denver Broncos’ franchise. Defensive end Bryce Fisher was a two-year starter on the defensive line and made his NFL debut in 2001 for the Buffalo Bills.
