Booking Former Akron Zips Player Appearances
The Akron Zips are a college basketball team representing the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. They are currently coached by Keith Dambrot and compete in the Mid-American Conference East division, established back in 1901. The Zips first NCAA tournament appearance was in 1986 under Bob Huggins, and they won their first MAC East division title in 1998. The team has been quite successful of late, with four consecutive 20-win seasons and three consecutive appearances in the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game.
The Zips won their first MAC Tournament title in 2009, advancing to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time in 23 years under Coach Dambrot. In 2010, the Zips were defeated by Ohio in the MAC Championship game, but in 2011 they came back to beat Kent State in their fifth consecutive appearance in the title game to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Some of Akron’s top players have included Joe Jakubick who was an All-American player and led the nation in scoring in the 1983-1984 NCAA Division I men’s basketball season. Nate Barnett was a part of the team in the ‘70s and went on to play for the NBA with the Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers. Bill Turner was a member of the Zips basketball team in the ‘60s, and went on to have a successful pro career from 1967 through 1973.
