The Arizona Diamondbacks are Major League Baseball team in the National League West division, based in Phoenix, Arizona and playing home games at Chase Stadium in downtown Phoenix. The D-backs, as they are sometimes called, were established in 1998 and won the World Series in their fourth season, becoming the fastest expansion team to ever win a championship.
The Diamondbacks became a force to be reckoned with almost immediately, winning their division in just their second season in 1999, managed by Buck Showalter, with leading players that included pitcher Randy Johnson, shortstop Jay Bell, and third baseman Matt Williams. In 2001, the team quickly made their way to the top managed by Bob Brenley with Luis Gonzalez given the National League Silver Slugger Award, Craig Counsell named NLCS MVP and pitchers Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling also making major contributions. Today, Kirk Gibson manages the Arizona team as they attempt to duplicate their 2011 division title win along with first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, pitcher Ian Kennedy and third baseman Ryan Roberts.
