Booking-Steve-GarveyThroughout sports history there have been athletes who have faced adversity, but none compare to those who have had to battle cancer. Some spectacular athletes have battled and overcome cancer like Lance Armstrong, Mario Lemieux and most recently added to the list is Baseball Legend Steve Garvey. Earlier this year Garvey was diagnosed with prostate cancer, a form of cancer that develops in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. The cancer required immediate surgery, which resulted in the removal of the prostate gland and some of the tissue around it. The surgery lasted well over 4 hours and at the end all 7 lymph nodes were clear of cancer.

Garvey was very fortunate to detect it early as most prostate cancers are slow growing; however, there are cases of aggressive prostate cancers which spread from the prostate to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and lymph nodes. Garvey isn’t alone in this battle as Prostate cancer is diagnosed in an estimated 80% of men who reach age 80. Victims of this vicious cancer must undergo radical prostatectomy which is an operation to remove the prostate gland. Garvey underwent a similar surgery and much like others he battled and went through extensive recovery.

Following his recovery, Garvey announced he will auction off much of his sports memorabilia, in part to raise money for cancer research.

Among the items that will go up for auction in April are Garvey’s 1974 NL MVP trophy, his 1981 World Series ring, his 1977 and 1978 NL Championship Series rings, his 1974 Gold Glove, his nine All-Star rings and the warmup jacket he wore for his final game for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1982. Seventy percent of the money raised from the auction will go to prostate cancer research.

Steve Garvey has always been a fighter and was recognized early in his career by receiving the nickname “Iron Man” for setting the National League consecutive games record with 1,207 straight. The “Iron Man” not only retired from the game with records, but as a 10-time All Star and 1974 National League MVP. Since trading in the glove and bat for the board room, Garvey has been running Garvey Communications which specializes in television production including infomercials. In addition he is hired out to do motivational speaking, mainly for corporations.

For companies looking for an accomplished athlete who has overcome all odds, Steve Garvey is perfect for the job.
