Jim Morris Speaking FeeThis upcoming June, Jim Morris will be a guest speaker at the second annual Varsity Best Preps Banquet. The event will be June 14th at the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center in Longview, Texas. The event is open to the public and the tickets will go on sale in May. The second installment of the event will honor over 250 coaches and players and will at the end honor the best male and female athlete, coach, and most outstanding athlete from each sport.

Jim Morris is a Brownwood, Texas native. Morris is best known for his brief but spectacular rise to an MLB career. Morris was selected in both the 1982 and 1983 MLB amateur baseball drafts, first by the New York Yankees and then by the Milwaukee Brewers. After several arm injuries, Morris was released after the 1987 season never moving past the single-A minor baseball leagues. Morris became a baseball coach for the Reagan County Owls after his career ended and during the team’s 1999 season Morris made a promise that if his team won the district championship, never done by them before, he would try out for a Major League Baseball team. After his team won the championship, Morris kept his end of the bargain by trying out for the then Tampa Bay Devil Rays and surprisingly threw multiple 98 mph pitches in a row. After the tryout the Devil Rays signed Morris to contract at the age of 35. In his Major League debut, Morris struck out the hitter, Royce Clayton, on four pitches fulfilling his dream of playing in the Majors. In 2002, the movie “The Rookie” was released to detail the story that Morris had getting to the big show at the ripe age of 35.

On June 14th, in Longview, Texas, Jim Morris will be a guest speaker at the second annual Varsity Best Preps Banquet. The event will look to have another great turnout that resembles last year’s inaugural banquet that included Herschel Walker as a guest speaker. Morris should provide a view of why you should never give up on your dreams.
